Impaired mobility of the mandible, stiffness of the masticatory muscles as well as sounds in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and orofacial pain are the main signs and symptoms of dysfunction of the masticatory system.
Our research activity has been focusing on physiological and pathological masticatory system function, with the goal of understanding the etiology of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and TMJ degeneration and help the clinician in the phases of assessment and treatment of TMDs.
For this goal, innovative and original technologies are developed in our laboratory and employed for both basic research and clinical trials, owing to collaborations across medical and technical fields.
Our research focuses on:
Mandibular motion capture and subject-specific dynamic simulation of masticatory system structures.
Electromyographic long-time acquisition of the activity of the masticatory muscles by means of portable biosignal recorders.
Computational biomechanics of the temporomandibular joint soft and hard tissues.
